Five tips to protect your charity

27 March 2025

According to the latest Charity Fraud Report, 42% of charities reported fraud or attempted fraud, and only 44% of charities had a fraud response plan. In today's challenging fraud environment, it's vital to safeguard the important work that charities do.

How can you protect your charity against fraud?

To help protect you and your colleagues against fraud, here are some key tips:

1. Verify payments and new bank details: Confirm the identity of the recipient and the purpose of the payment. Ensure you have received the goods or services before paying an invoice. When making payments to a new bank account, contact the payee by phone to verify the new details.

2. Check Confirmation of Payee (COP): For online banking payments, if COP alerts you to mismatched details, contact the intended recipient by phone, not email. You can find further guidance here.

3. Resist pressure: Be cautious if you're urged to make a payment quickly with limited-time offers or threats of penalties. Take time to verify the request's authenticity.

4. Be cautious of online marketplaces and unexpected offers: Ensure both the goods and seller are legitimate, especially if the offer seems too good to be true. If you receive an unexpected gift or donation but are asked to pay fees, it may be a scam. Agree to pay charges only after receiving the goods.

5. Protect your codes: Never share the codes we send for online banking or card payments. Your bank or the authorities will never ask for these codes.
